Labour have held their seat in Cazenove, with Patrick Pinkerton set to become the new Labour councillor following Eluzer Goldberg’s resignation.

Pinkerton won with 1,974 votes, beating Conservative candidate Hershi Moskovits by a slim majority of 136.

He said: “It’s been a long day and long morning, but I look forward to working really hard to represent the people of Cazenove and to work for the great London Borough of Hackney."

Speaking after the by-election result in her old ward, Mayor Caroline Woodley said: “He’s an all-round good guy and I’m absolutely thrilled for him.

“He’s an excellent candidate and I’m really proud of what he’s achieved”.

Turnout for the by-election was boosted by the general election, with just over half of Cazenove residents voting for a new councillor.

This is up significantly from the ward’s January by-election, when turnout was 32%.

The Green Party saw gains in last week's vote, with their candidate, Tamara Micner, receiving triple the number of votes she received in January.

She ultimately finished in third place, with 1,170 votes.

Dalston Councillor and co-leader of the Hackney Green Party Zoe Garbett said: “The surge in Green party vote share echoes the bigger picture that we’re seeing tonight.

"People are coming out to vote Green, and those changes are being felt both locally and nationally.”
