A Hackney man is among three charged with helping Hong Kong spies under national security offences.
Chung Biu Yuen, 63, of Hackney, is among three men who have now been charged with assisting the Hong Kong intelligence service and foreign interference.
The two other men charged are - Chi Leung (Peter) Wai, 38, of Staines-upon-Thames and Matthew Trickett, 37, of Maidenhead.
The trio will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today (May 13).
A total of 11 people – 10 in Yorkshire and one in London - were detained earlier this month after an investigation led by officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism Command.
Seven men and one woman were not charged and have been released from custody.
Police say they will only share limited details of the investigation, as it relates to offences under the National Security Act 2023.
The Met stressed the charges are not related to a recently reported counter terrorism probe linked to Russia.
Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s counter terrorism command, said: “While these offences are concerning, I want to reassure the public that we do not believe there to be any wider threat to them.
“This investigation remains ongoing, but now that charges have been brought, I urge people not to speculate or comment further in relation to this case.”
