The oldest standing Wetherspoons pub is set to go up for sale.
The Hackney Gazette understands that The Rochester Castle in Stoke Newington High Street will soon be going on the market.
The boozer, which is the oldest standing of the chain’s pubs, became a Wetherspoons in 1982, three years after the company was founded by Tim Martin.
But the Stoke Newington watering hole – which has been a feature on the high street for the more than 200 years – is likely to have a new owner in the near future.
The decision to put the pub up for sale comes a year after the chain said it would seek prospective buyers for 39 of its branches across the country.
As when these pubs went up for sale, it is almost certain that The Rochester Castle will continue to operate as a Wetherspoons until a buyer is found.
A spokesperson for Wetherspoons declined to comment.
