A by-election called after the election of a new Hackney Mayor is set to be held in less than a week.

The vacancy in Cazenove ward occurred after councillor Caroline Woodley was elected Hackney's Mayor on November 9, leaving her seat vacant.

The mayoral election was called after former Mayor Philip Glanville stood down after a picture emerged of him with former councillor Tom Dewey at a Eurovision party, taken hours after Mr Glanville learned Dewey had been arrested over possession of indecent images of children.

Four candidates are now vying to fill the council seat vacated by Mayor Woodley.

The winner in next Thursday’s vote (January 18) will represent the ward alongside Labour's Cllr Eluzer Goldberg and Cllr Sam Pallis.

Here we take a look at the candidates in the order they appear on the statement of persons nominated notice.

Tamara Micner - Green party

Yiddish teacher, playwright and performer Tamara Micner, has been chosen as the Green party candidate for the by-election.

Micner, who has lived in Hackney for more than 10 years, has previously been involved with London Renters' Union, Extinction Rebellion Jews, and Extinction Rebellion Hackney.

She is a member and former trustee of Kehillah North London Synagogue in Stoke Newington, and says she wants to end “sexism, racism, antisemitism and classism”.

Micner said: "If elected, I would work to bridge divisions and inequalities in our communities, improve everyone's standard of living, and hold the Labour Party to account in Hackney Council."

Laura Pascal - Labour

Laura Pascal is hoping to hold the council seat for the Labour party.

A self-professed feminist and “policy wonk”, she has been endorsed by her predecessor, who said Pascal has been “working her socks off to keep Cazenove red”.

Woodley won the most votes (1,724) at the council elections in 2022, something Pascal will be hoping to emulate.

Pascal said: “It’s a real privilege and honour to be selected to stand to represent the community I love so much and have been a part of for so long.

“I know I am joining a team which works hard for the local community, and I hope I can bring balance and unity to our local community, faced with so much upheaval elsewhere in the world.”

Dave Raval - Liberal Democrats

Dave Raval has been selected as the Liberal Democrats candidate for Cazenove.

According to his social media, he is the chair of London Lib Dems candidates – as well as an Arsenal fan.

Raval says he is trying his best to “reduce climate change and inequality, and improve the wellbeing of NHS staff”.

Ian Sharer - Conservatives

Ian Sharer has been selected as the Conservative and Unionist Party candidate for the by-election.

Hackney Conservatives have been contacted for more information about their candidate.
