Around 50 people had to flee their homes after 10 acres of land was flooded following a canal burst.
Following the Met Office’s yellow warning for heavy rain across London during the evening of Thursday (January 4), there were reports of flooding in different parts of the capital.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to flooding between Dace Road and Wick Road in Hackney Wick yesterday (January 4) after 10.16pm.
A canal burst its banks, causing the water to spread to around 10 acres of surrounding land and affecting people in their homes.
The London Fire Brigade says that while 100 people were able to remain where they were unaffected, nearly 50 people were led to safety.
Eventually the incident was over by 1.50am.
Station Commander Dan Capon, who was at the scene, said: "Firefighters worked through the night to ensure the scene was safe and evacuated a number of people from surrounding buildings.
"We urged people to avoid the area where possible. Remember - if your property is affected by flooding, move to a higher level where possible. If you are in immediate danger, call 999. Follow the advice of the operator."
