A 25-year-old man has been arrested after he alegedly attacked a passerby and hurled racist comments in Hackney. 

Officers from Met Police were on patrol in Stoke Newington High Street at around 12.30pm on Saturday (June 3) when they were stopped by a member of the public.  

They were informed that a man had reportedly assaulted a person on the street while making antisemitic remarks.

The man was tracked down by the police and arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault. A spokesperson for Met Police claimed that the man then went on to assault officers too.

He also said to have damaged a police van and was further arrested in relation to these offences.

He now remains in custody and the incident is being treated as a hate crime by the police.

This comes after another man was arrested on allegations of shouting antisemitic slurs at a Jewish passerby on Ravensdale Road in Hackney on May 7.
