Hackney people can take part in a host of King Charles III Coronation events over the bank holiday weekend.

Saturday, May 6

  • Hoxton Street Market and Hoxton Gardens, 11am-2pm

This coronation celebration will feature performances by Grand Union Orchestra, a crown-making workshop, a comic/zine-making workshop, DJ workshops and roaming circus performers.

The coronation event will be shown live on a big screen outside the Howl at the Moon pub.

  • Hackney Central Library

The library will be throwing a tea party with a screen showing the coronation.

Coronation-themed craft activities will be available at all other libraries as well.

  • Street parties

Eight roads will be closed on May 6 - Wilton Way, Middleton Road, Statham Grove, Elmcroft Street and Grayling Road.

  • Big Coronation Lunches

At least 18 estate-based Big Lunch events will be held across the borough over the weekend.

These are being supported by up to £750 grants from Hackney Council who received 51 applications for funding.

Sunday, May 7

The coronation concert at Windsor Castle takes place from 7pm to 10pm, broadcast live on the BBC. Performers will include Take That, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie.

St John-at-Hackney Church, 1pm to 5pm

The church is throwing a community garden party in the walled garden in the Church Gardens.

Monday, May 8

Hackney Town Hall, 3pm

The East London School of Music (ELSOM) is hosting a free concert in the Hackney Town Hall assembly rooms.

The ELSOM Youth Orchestra, Hampstead Adventist Choral Society Philharmonic Orchestra and soloists will also perform.

Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville said: "In Hackney we pride ourselves on our community spirit.

"The coronation of King Charles III is a historic event which I have no doubt will bring all our communities together to enjoy a monumental celebration. 

"I can’t wait to join everyone at the wide range of events being hosted across the borough over the bank holiday weekend and to celebrate this exciting occasion together.

"We know Hackney has for centuries also been home to more dissenting voices and traditions, which is reflected to this day with street parties where both Republicans and Monarchists are coming together to mark this moment."
